START EARLY ! GET RID OF
CLUTTER AND LEAVE IT BEHIND !
1. Start packing surplus
items. Pack anything you will not need before the move. Begin in
the basement or garage.
2. Dispose of old clothes, outgrown toys and unused household items.
3. Have a garage sale or donate to the local charity.
4. AVOID MOVING ANYTHING YOU DON'T REALLY NEED.
5. Pack one room at a time. Label each box with the room name.
When unloading, the movers will know where to take it in
the new home.
6. Pack all items that will be needed immediately at the new house
in the same box. Mark that box to indicate it is a priority.
Perhaps with a large letter "P" for Priority.
Be sure to pack some bed linens in Priority box for easy access for that
first
night..
7. Find someone to watch the kids on moving day.
8. Enlist all the help you can. Solicit family and friends.
More hands mean quicker results and less work for all. Perhaps
offer
a "thank you" pizza party when the job is done.
9. If hiring a moving company, be sure to find someone with a good
reputation. It is worth the investment.
10. Pack a small box of basic tools and keep it handy. You
will need these for setting up furniture, etc at the new house.
11. Pack a suitcase as though you are going on a three day
vacation. Clothes, toiletries, etc. This will give you the
essentials
you need for the first few days without
searching for items packed away.
12. DO NOT PACK THE BOXES TOO HEAVY.
13. Place all small parts of items that are taken apart in a
plastic bag and tape to the item for easy re-assembly.
At The New House:
1.
Place each box in the correct room directly from the truck. (boxes
should already be marked with the room name)
2. Set up the beds. You will need a nice place to rest at the end of
the day.
3. Start with the kitchen. Unpack the "priority" boxes first.
You will be quickly on your way to a functional room.
4. Pick the one room you use the most. Unpack and set up this room
first. This will give you at least one room to retreat from
the chaos.
5. Keep mailing labels on hand with the new address. This will make
quick work when filling out change of address notices.
6. Set priorities and tackle one room at a time.
